Here’s the thing nobody tells you about stress.
You can’t really tell how much stress you have, because the way our brain works as people, we can’t see or feel stress directly.
So basically you have no solid reference point for your true stress level, and the only reading you sense is against yesterday.
So when you say you’re fine, it’s just means your stress level is pretty much the same as it’s been the past few days.
I’m Christian Pyrros, Senior Mentor at elevanation. I’ve invested 25 years working with successful career pros, leaders and professionals.
What I often see with my clients is, despite all the excellent things they have and do, one little blind spot, and that little blind spot is dangerous. In the worst cases, I’ve seen it destroy an otherwise amazing career, just for failing to manage a couple things.
It’s because they can’t see the stress they’re carrying, and they’ve carried it so long, it now feels normal, even though it’s far from normal or sustainable.
And at some point, the body reacts, with burnout, health issues, or a career-ending mistake.
There’s no reason to keep suffering, since today we have the tools and the technology to get you back on track.
That’s what I want to share with you today.
What Is a Stress Management Coach?
A stress management coach helps you find the real sources of pressure in your work and life, then builds a system to remove them at the root. No diagnosis, no medication, no digging through your childhood. Just a clear baseline, a clear plan, and someone checking that you follow it.
Most people lower their stress by 20 or 30 percent and stop, because the rest is invisible to them. A stress management coach exists to make the invisible part visible, then take it out.
The 20 to 30 Percent Trap
You take the vacation. You quit the side project. You stop answering messages on Sunday. You feel lighter. So you decide the problem is handled.
It isn’t.
What you removed is the pressure you could see. What’s left is the background load: the co founder conversation you’ve postponed for two years, the role you’ve outgrown, the money worry you never say out loud, the fact that your whole identity is bolted to your title. That load doesn’t announce itself. It sits quietly and runs your decisions from behind a curtain.
This is why people crash six months after their best quarter. This is why leaders who just took a “reset” snap at a junior over a slide deck on a Tuesday. The reset worked. The background load was untouched.
That’s why core clarity on stress is the only thing that solves it for good. Not more coping. Clarity first, then removal.
Core Clarity in Three Steps
This is exactly what we do on the free call, and it’s the difference between guessing and knowing.
1. Name the true load
Write the real inventory. Not the version you tell at dinner. The unmade decision, the person you’re not being honest with, the task a system should be doing. My clients usually guess three items. They find twelve.
2. Split pressure from meaning
Work that costs you something you chose to spend gives you energy. Work that costs you something you never agreed to spend gives you burnout. They feel identical on a Thursday. They are completely different problems.
3. Set a baseline you can return to
Not “I feel better.” How you sleep, how you decide, how fast you recover, how you speak to your team. That’s the only scoreboard that tells the truth.
For your success, this is the highest leverage hour you’ll spend this quarter. And if you’d rather start with the basics, the NHS guidance on reducing stress is a sensible place to begin, and the American Psychological Association’s overview of stress explains why the response reaches nearly every system in your body.
Where Your Stress Is Actually Hiding
There are three layers, and they need three different tools. Trying to solve all three with a better to do list never works.
1. Operational: your calendar, inbox and commitments. Noisy and the easiest to fix. If this is all you fix, you’ve done your 20 or 30 percent.
2. Relational: unresolved human friction. The boss who doesn’t defend you, the client who treats you as a vendor, the conversation you rehearse in the shower. In my experience this does more long term career damage than workload ever does, because it makes you smaller in rooms where you should be big.
3. Identity: the part of you that fused your worth to your output. It’s why a quiet week feels like a threat. It’s why retirement scares high performers, a theme I’ve written about in my piece on the retirement transition and in the truth about retirement coaching.
Most burned out professionals have all three running at once. Seeing them clearly from the inside is nearly impossible. That’s what a stress coach is for. It’s also why a stress reduction coach starts with three honest conversations instead of a fix you didn’t ask for.
The Cost of Stress You Can’t Feel
This isn’t a wellness talking point. It’s a performance number.
OSHA reports that 75 percent of adults name work as a significant source of stress, and the same page links workplace stress to roughly 120,000 deaths in the United States each year. OSHA also puts the return on mental health investment at about four dollars in productivity for every dollar spent.
Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace research found only about 20 percent of employees worldwide are engaged at work, and estimates low engagement costs the world economy around 10 trillion dollars a year.
The CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health defines job stress as the harmful response that happens when job demands don’t match your capabilities, resources or needs. Notice what’s missing: how it feels. A mismatch is structural. You can live in one for years and never name it.
In the UK, CIPD’s stress factsheet calls stress a major cause of long term absence and says employers should assess risk systematically, not wait for someone to break. The HSE’s Management Standards name the same six pressure points, and they’re worth reading before you decide your problem is personal.
Read that again and notice who it describes. Not people in crisis. People who show up, deliver, and quietly underperform their own potential by 30 or 40 percent.
What We Do Differently at elevanation
elevanation is built on a simple belief: nobody reaches their potential alone, and most people were never taught how to access theirs.
We support you and your business or career with three things.
1. Strategic career coaching, so your next move is designed rather than drifted into.
2. Mindset mentoring, so the standards and fears underneath your stress get resolved instead of managed. This is where a stress management coach changes your trajectory, not just your mood.
3. Sales and business systems, so your pipeline runs on structure instead of adrenaline. Your sales system is a stress system. If revenue depends on you personally remembering to follow up, every quiet week feels like an emergency.
We work 1 on 1, you get a written action plan so you know exactly what to do each day, and we tell you the truth.
We’re trusted by people from organizations including the University of Chicago, CME Group, Mercedes and Volkswagen.
Your Stress Has a Type
Generic stress management coaching falls apart here, because your stress wears your personality.
An ENTP’s stress looks like seventeen open tabs and impatience with anyone slower. An ISTJ’s looks like rigidity and refusing help until the system collapses. An ESTJ’s looks like controlling more of the room. An INFP’s hides behind a smile for months.
I’ve written about this throughout our personality library, including career paths that fit the wide angle ENTP brain, how to solve conflict between an INFP and an ESTP at work, and my breakdown of unhealthy ESTP patterns. Different types, same message: this isn’t a character flaw. It’s a mismatch plus an unmeasured load.

FAQ
What does a stress management coach do?
Maps your real sources of pressure, separates what to remove from what to rebuild, designs your recovery and boundaries, works on the mindset underneath, and holds you accountable weekly. You get a baseline and a plan, not a pep talk.
Is stress coaching different from therapy?
Yes. Therapy is right for trauma, clinical conditions and patterns rooted in your past. Stress coaching is right for structural, forward looking problems: an unsustainable role, a business that depends on you, career decisions you keep avoiding. Many people use both.
How do I know if my stress is a problem when I feel fine?
Because fine is relative. Compare to your own baseline, not to yesterday or to a colleague who’s struggling more. If your sleep, recovery or patience have declined over a year, the load grew, whether or not it feels like it. I’ve watched brilliant people understand this perfectly and change nothing for a year. That’s why the call ends with a written plan.
How many sessions does stress management coaching take?
Four to six sessions with a stress reduction coach for a contained issue with one dominant source. Three to six months of stress management coaching for systemic patterns like recurring burnout or a business outgrowing your habits.
Can a stress coach help entrepreneurs?
Faster than almost anyone, because founders carry all three layers at once. In my experience the highest leverage change for a founder is usually building a sales system that removes the fear every quiet week brings.
Is the elevanation call really free?
It is. Normally $150, free for a limited time. You leave with a baseline, clarity on your biggest layer, and two next moves, whether or not you continue with us. There’s more of my long form thinking on the elevanation blog if you’d like to read before you decide.
What if I don’t need mentoring?
Then I’ll say so on the call and send you somewhere better suited, whether that’s a clinician or a simpler change. Telling people the truth is cheaper than selling them the wrong thing.
